Environmental Engel Curves: A Neural Network Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
Abstract Environmental Engel curves describe how households' income relates to the pollution associated with services and goods consumed. This paper estimates these neural networks using novel dataset constructed in Levinson O'Brien. We provide further statistical rigor empirical analysis by constructing prediction intervals obtained from network methods such as extra-neural nets MC dropout. The application of techniques for five different pollutants allow us confirm statistically that are upward sloping, have elasticities smaller than one shift down, becoming more concave, over time. Importantly, last year sample, we find an inverted U shape suggests existence a maximum medium-to-high levels household beyond which flattens or decreases top earners.

Neural Network Based Modelling of Environmental Variables: A Systematic Approach
F&forward artificial neural networks (ANNs) that are tralned with the back-propagation algorithm are a useful tool for modelling environmental systems. They have almady been successfully used to model salinity, nutrient concentrations, air pollution, and algal growth. These successes, coupled with their suitability for modellmg complex systems, have resulted in an increase in their popularity a...

متن کاملQuadratic Engel Curves and Consumer Demand
This paper presents a model of consumer demand that is consistent with the observed expenditure patterns of individual consumers in a long time series of expenditure surveys and is also able to provide a detailed welfare analysis of shifts in relative prices. A nonparametric analysis of consumer expenditure patterns suggests that Engel curves require quadratic terms in the logarithm of expendit...
متن کاملAt the Origins of Engel Curves Estimation
This paper revisits Ernst Engel’s (1857) original article in which he systematically investigated the relationship between consumption expenditure and income. While he is mainly remembered today for the discovery of Engel’s law, we highlight how Engel addressed in a particular way the issue of the relation between statistical empirical analysis and economic theorizing. Inspired by an inductive ...
متن کاملA Partitioned Neural Network Approach
A novel pattern classification technique and a new feature extraction method are described and tested for vowel classification. The pattern classification technique partitions an N-way classification task into N*(N-1)/2 two-way classification tasks. Each two-way classification task is performed using a neural network classifier that is trained to discriminate the two members of one pair of cate...
